Why take the BEC Preliminary exam
Each candidate receives a written report showing the results achieved in each part of the examination. If you pass the exam, you will receive a Cambridge English Language Assessment certificate that is valid for life.

Content of the exam
The exam is for candidates with a basic level of English. This level corresponds to level B1.
Reading and Writing (90 minutes)
The reading section tests the ability to read and understand the content of different types of texts. The candidate performs tasks such as selecting from options, combining options, completing text and forms or deciding on truth and falsity. In the writing section, the candidate must produce two texts. The first involves communicating with a colleague about a business matter via a note, memo or email. The second may be a letter, fax or email to someone outside the company - a customer, supplier etc.
Reading and writing account for 50% of the total score.Listening (40 minutes)
The ability to understand spoken language in different situations and to grasp the main ideas is tested. Recordings can be excerpts from conversations, discussions and phone calls.
Listening accounts for 25% of the total score.Speaking (12 minutes)
The candidate's reactions, expressions of agreement or disagreement and ability to reason with the examiner and the other candidate are checked.

Rating
The threshold for passing the exam is 140 out of 170 points from all parts of the exam combined. Candidates who achieve a score of 120-139 will be awarded an A2 level certificate.
160 - 170 = Pass with Distinction (Corresponds to level B2.)
153 - 159 = Pass with Merit
140 - 152 = Pass
120 - 139 = Level A2 (The candidate receives an A2 level certificate.)
